Subsea 7 currently has a requirement for a Graduate Naval Architect to work as part of the Fleet and Equipment team in the Offshore Resources Group. This is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to develop and practice their engineering skills in a dynamic and challenging environment.

Position Overview

After a two year period of training placements in the Offshore Resources Fleet & Equipment teams (Crane, Pipelay, ROV, Diving & Marine Engineering), the Graduate Naval Architect will Assist the Naval Architects in providing specialist technical support to Subsea 7’s worldwide fleet in collaboration with other engineering specialists in the F&E department. The successful candidate will report directly to the Naval Architecture Manager.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide daily assistance to Marine Superintendents on technical matters relating to structural and naval architectural issues.
  • Assistance with the preparation of specifications, scopes of work, calculations and procedures for modifications.
  • Assist with the management of third party consultants retained to undertake structural and naval architectural studies.
  • Assist with the production of hydrostatic, stability and miscellaneous structural calculations.
  • Provide assistance to Vessel Superintendents and Project Managers with preparation of vessel docking specifications.
  • Assistance with and reporting of deadweight surveys / inclining tests together with the production and delivery of approved stability documentation.
  • Liaison with Flag State, Port State and Classification Society representatives on technical matters.
  • Attendance on site (regional and global) in support of ship personal as required.
  • Technical support to new build projects when required.
  • Provision of Naval Architectural services to other Subsea 7 departments (regional and worldwide) in areas such as tender and project support.
  • Coordinate and update vessel RAO database


  • Accredited Degree in Naval Architecture or a similar discipline at Masters level. Consideration will be given to exceptional candidates with Batchelor level Degrees.
  • The incumbent will be expected to work toward CEng status in RINA and/or IMechE


  • Good analytical & numeracy skills
  • Internships in shipbuilding yards or dockyards – advantageous


  • Good working knowledge of standard Windows packages (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Knowledge of Autohydro / Autoload (Advantageous @ student level)
  • Knowledge of DNV software, STAAD, ANSYS and familiarity with large scale FE analysis methods (Advantageous @ student level)
  • Good analytical, planning and organisational capabilities with the ability to meet defined objectives and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills – spoken and written English
  • Ability to explain results of work to both technical and non-technical colleagues


  • The position is based at our East Campus, Westhill, Aberdeen.


  • As the position supports the Global Fleet there may be a requirement to travel to shipyards/dry-dockings and construction sites.
