Subsea 7 has an exciting opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer to be part of the specialist geotechnical discipline within the Subsea 7 Aberdeen office, specifically supporting the Seaway Offshore Cables offshore renewable energy sector.  The Geotechnical Department reports to the Specialist Technical Services function within North Sea and Canada Central Engineering and supports Subsea 7’s offshore renewable energy divisions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Complete geotechnical engineering aspects of tenders, studies and projects, with support from senior team members, specifically for the Renewable market
  • Evaluate the quality of available site investigation data for tenders, studies and projects, and be capable of specifying and supervising site investigations when needed
  • Interpret and use offshore site investigation data and be able to integrate results into parameters for detailed design of offshore windfarm cabling & subsea infrastructure
  • Carry out soil/cable interaction analyses, and support the associated engineering disciplines for cable / umbilical installation analyses, stability analyses, buckling and walking assessments
  • Complete offshore trenching and rock dumping assessments
  • Understand the nature of the various geohazards affecting a site and evaluate their impact on the construction
  • Understand general geotechnical issues and evaluate any associated financial / safety / quality implications to Subsea 7 / Seaway Offshore Cables
  • Take part of offshore assignments, such as the supervision of offshore site investigations, foundation installation, and pipeline trenching works as required
  • Participate to the development of Subsea 7 / Seaway Offshore Cables in the offshore renewables industry
  • Contribute to Innovation and Technology Development related to soil/cable and soil/structure interactions. Contribute to internal R & D activities relating to soil/structure and/or pipeline interaction
  • Be able to innovate and think differently to optimise technical solutions
  • Be able to present their work effectively to multi-disciplinary / multi-national teams and in front of clients
  • The selected candidate will have good commercial awareness and experience of producing Cost, Time & Resource plans for tenders & studies
  • The selected candidate will report to the Discipline manager and be part of a successful multi-cultural and international team
  • The following would also be an advantage:
    • Undertake detailed design and installation of gravity based, piled & suction installed foundations and evaluate/recommend reeled-pipe-lay initiation anchorage
    • Use of limit analysis for estimation of collapse load for foundations subject to complex loading
    • Use of 2D and 3D finite element software (Plaxis) for analysis and design of complex soil-structure interaction problems

Qualifications:

  • Master degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Geoscience or Geology with specialisation in Geotechnical Engineering aspects
  • Previous relevant working experience requried
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding and experience of offshore site investigations, foundation design, cable / soil interaction & cable mechanical protection aspects
  • Understanding and appreciation of Geographical Information System data systems. Applicants who are competent users would be at an advantage

  • Understanding of clients’ needs and ability to suggest and apply “fit for purpose” solutions
  • Sound communication skills – able to communicate ideas and results to various stakeholders (both in written reports and in meetings, presentations etc.) particularly in English
  • The ability to work in a team as well as individually with a minimum of supervision
