GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The fundamental purpose of our business is safe and efficient project delivery, which include supporting by design, fabricating and installing the following:

  • SURF – Subsea Umbilicals, Risers and Flowlines generally supporting offshore oil & gas developments,
  • Developing new technologies and pushing current methods to deliver projects in deeper water depths (10,000 to 12,000 feet),
  • Developing new technologies and pushing current methods to deliver projects that have higher pressures (greater than 15,000 psi) and higher temperatures (greater than 280° F),
  • Project values will range from $75K (early concept studies) to $200M plus (Full design and execute).

The GoM Region is known for having a varied client base of oil & gas operators from the super majors down to smaller independents and a wide spread of project scope and complexity from simple pipeline projects in shallow water to full subsea field developments out in the basins of the Gulf of Mexico.  To ensure successful subsea project outcomes, front end activities must be carried out in a robust manner to ensure all early strategic decisions are of high quality, such that an optimum solution is selected and considered for development.

To this end, Subsea 7 Houston established a Field Development Group to engage with our clients at the earliest stages of the development cycle. A team of general and specialized engineers review and optimize development options, provide the Client with indicative costs and schedules, identify key risks and opportunities and provide recommendations.  Often, studies will be performed in close collaboration with our alliance partner(s).

The Field Development Group in Houston also networks with our peers in other Subsea 7 offices around the globe, so that we can leverage and include best practices and lesson learned.

The Riser Engineer will be assigned various tasks (see below) by the Field Development Director in support of the overall strategy and requirements of the Field Development Group.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the responsibility of the SURF Solutions Manager or Project Engineering Manager, you will develop the documentation package and the studies linked to the sizing and analysis of various riser systems and options. You will participate with your technical expertise to ensure the validity of the design assumptions in relation with the system interface and the consistency and optimization of the developed models.  Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Provides specialist skills in (riser motion analysis and design), integrity and knowledge in key areas of discipline engineering (global motion analysis, stress and strain, vortex induced vibration, catenary analysis, hydrodynamic loadings, etc.), familiarity with industry design codes (particularly API 2RD, DNV OS F201, API 17J, ASME B31.8/31.4, CFR compliance) and current good engineering practice.  Strive to understand clients' needs; identifies and addresses design parameters and problems; develops and implements economically viable solutions.
  • Deliver the technical input as well as support establishing the cost basis for all studies and (pre)FEED/FEED proposals.
  • Support the Field Development Group to deliver the technical strategy with regards to client needs on tenders, projects and studies. You will recommend and/or confirm (via parametrics or actual analysis) what riser types could be appropriate for the development strategy from the point of view of fatigue life, capital cost, maintainability, life cycle costs, environment suitability, possible in-country contribution and ease of constructability.
  • Undertakes responsibility for production of deliverables, which may include engineering oversight or actual performance of engineering calculations/modelling/analysis to support the Drawing Office, design calculations reports, specifications, installation procedures, analysis, input on progress reports, bid evaluations, study reports and possibly various 3rd-party submissions.
  • Review own work and work performed by resources assigned on a continuous basis, to ensure that
    • The technical scope is being delivered in accordance with the budget and schedule
    • The technical scope is being delivered to the quality standards expected within Subsea 7 and addressing the specific needs and expectations of the client.
    • Risks are being identified and mitigation strategies put in place.
    • Opportunities for the application of new technologies are being captured and recorded appropriately.
    • An efficient resolution is developed for technical issues slowing progress and/or affecting performance. As appropriate drive higher level management support and actions.
    • Lessons learned are captured and recorded appropriately.
  • Foster a strong HSEQ culture within the teams.
  • Encourage use of the Lessons Learned and Synergy systems for continuous improvement.
