GENERAL DESCRIPTION

         The fundamental purpose of our business is safe and efficient project delivery. The GoM Region is known for having a varied client base and a wide spread of project scopes and varying levels complexity. To ensure successful subsea project outcomes, front end and other activities and involvement must be carried out in a robust manner to ensure all early strategic decisions are of high quality so  that an optimum solution is selected, considered for developed and progressed through the project process including fabrication and delivery.

 

         To this end, Subsea 7 Houston established a Field Development Group to engage with our clients at the earliest stages of the development cycle. We review and optimize development options, provide the Client with indicative costs and schedules, identify key risks, opportunities and provide recommendations. Often, studies will be performed in close collaboration with our alliance partner.

 

         The Field Development Group in Houston also networks with our peers in other Subsea 7 offices around the globe, so that we can leverage and include best practices and lesson learned.

 

         The Subsea Power Systems and Controls Engineer will be assigned various tasks by the Field Development Director and other Managers in support of the overall strategy and requirements of the Field Development Group and Regional Business Units.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides specialist skills, integrity and knowledge in key areas of discipline engineering, including design codes, legislative requirements and current good engineering practice. Strive to understand clients' needs; identifies and addresses design parameters and problems; proposes, develops, and implements economically viable solutions.
  • Deliver technical input(s) and supports establishing the cost basis for all studies and (pre)FEED/FEED proposals.
  • Directly support the Field Development Group to deliver the technical strategy with regards to client needs on tenders and projects.
  • Directly support the Regional Business Units to deliver technical details to address project and client needs, concerns, questions, and other activities to successfully complete project objectives and deliverables in a way the meet client needs, expectations, schedule, and budget.
  • Undertakes responsibility for production of deliverables, which may include engineering support to the Drawing Office, design calculations, specifications, procedures, analyses, input on progress reports, bid evaluations, study reports and various 3rd-party submissions
  • Manage any and all resources assigned by the Engineering Department and other functions as and where applicable and needed for the successful execution of studies and projects.
  • As and when required by the Field Development Director, may be required to act as a Lead on smaller scopes of work.
  • Review own work and work performed by resources assigned on a continuous basis, to ensure that
    • The technical scope is being delivered in accordance with the budget and schedule
    • The technical scope is being delivered to the quality standards expected within Subsea 7 and addressing the specific needs and expectations of the client.
    • Risks are being identified and mitigation strategies put in place.
    • Opportunities are being captured, recorded, and communicated appropriately.
    • An efficient resolution (or set of resolutions) is developed for technical issues slowing progress and/or affecting performance. As appropriate drive higher level management support and actions.
    • Lessons learned are captured and recorded appropriately.
  • Foster a strong HSEQ culture within the teams.
  • Encourage use of the Lessons Learned and Synergy systems for continuous improvement.
  • Attendance at Design Reviews, HIRAs, and other Project Meetings as needed or required.
  • May also be assigned to projects that have transitioned to EPCI to provide expertise to the BU that is executing the project. These assignments may include oversight of subcontractors/vendors activities and system manufacture.

  • Utilize resources assigned to studies and projects, within the budget assigned for those studies and projects.
  • Operate within legal framework, budgets and safety procedures.
  • Operate within Subsea 7’s Management System, policies and strategy.

 

CAPABILITY PROFILE – Subsea Controls and Systems

Education/Qualifications

  • Candidate will have a university degree in an appropriate Engineering Discipline (Electrical and Electronic preferred). A degree in Mechanical Engineering or other discipline may be consider with a good experience covering various electrical/electronic and power systems as well.
  • It is preferable that candidates can demonstrate a commitment to Continuing Professional Development activities.

Skills

  • Technical:
    • Candidate should be computer literate and familiar with Microsoft office.
    • In-depth knowledge and the ability to interpret the design codes used on subsea systems including API (17F, 17E, 17N, 17O, 17V, 17Z, etc.), ISO, DNV, ANSI, IEEE and others. Strong understanding of the boundaries and conservatism of the basic codes, but also when and how to employ the “alternatives” typical found in the addendums and appendices.
    • Experience with single and three-phase power distribution systems and switchgear, protection and isolation philosophies and equipment, and safe operating practices for low-, medium-, and high-voltage.
    • Proven experience in building screening/design and analysis tools in Excel, MathCAD, ETAP, OptEM and other software packages based upon the various regulations, codes, standards, and applications.
    • Well versed in reading, evaluating, optimizing and creating P&IDs, PSDs, PFDs, electrical one-line diagrams, systems simplified drawings, electrical/electronic layouts, etc. Preference for capability with AutoCAD or similar drafting application(s).
    • Previous experience with various protection philosophies and methods including system safe-out/shutdown, subsea interlock and shutdown schemes supporting the long term operation of the subsea systems; ability to work with the client to develop project-specific operational schemes based on these.
    • Firm understanding of various power systems and subsystems, equipment sensors, protocols, and data acquisition methods as they relate to power systems and reservoir management and system integrity.
    • Must be able to understand, interpret and guide detailed design and installation engineering of power generation and transmission systems and subsystems, where such work is performed by other specialist engineers.
    • Must be able to collaborate with project management as well as other engineers on knowledge/experience gaps, technical and/or safety risks or other hindrances to the efficient execution of tasks related to study or project deliverables.

 

  • Interpersonal:
    • Sound communication skills; oral, written and electronic.
    • Self-Management - Ability to prioritise own and workload, manage time and change control accordingly based on team constraints understanding that there are impacts affecting a project in terms of program, schedule, and/or budget.
    • Ability to manage interfaces within a project structure, including other disciplines, drawing office, document control, project management, client and suppliers.
    • Strong understanding of system design and team approach. Understanding of the interdependency of the various elements and required interfaces to support the whole solution.
    • Desire to branch out beyond core technical expertise, to learn and gain a better understanding of the other disciplines and thus a better understanding of the “whole subsea production system”.
    • Ability to identify areas of technical uncertainty, lack of knowledge, technical gaps, or otherwise outside of “comfort zone” and be able to plan, research, understand and then reduce uncertainty in those areas as they apply to subsea power systems and controls.

Experience and Behaviour

  • It is essential that candidates must have 7 to 12+ years of progressive subsea power systems and controls engineering experience. Significant experience with a subsea power equipment manufacturer/provider is a plus.
  • Experience detailing/specifying umbilical (cores) and connector components supporting subsea power and control systems.
  • Technical knowledge and experience in design, installation, and procurement for projects including SURF, Conventional and IMR.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Majority of the work is carried out in the local office site in Houston, Texas.
  • Requirement for occasional travel to clients or other Company offices or sites.
  • Possible manufacturing site visits as needed to support specific project requirements.
  • Working hours according to local regulations and Company's policy.
