OVERVIEW OF ROLE

 

The Principal Designer is responsible for applying advanced techniques to produce complex drawings and sketches consistent with good engineering practice and in compliance with company procedures and will have responsibility for checking and overseeing the work of other personnel in the department. They may have responsibility for a team of Designers/Draftsmen in the department for a drafting services package provided to a project.

 

They should have extensive knowledge and training related to drafting and design within Marine and/or Oil and Gas industry.

 

SPECIFIC KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES

 

  • Under broad direction assigns, oversees, checks, and approves the work of a team of Designers/Draftsmen.

 

  • Proficient in creating models, engineering drawings and layouts with minimal instruction for subsea structures and equipment layouts, fabrication, transportation, and installation (PLETs, Jumpers, Suction Piles, Flying Leads, Deck and Field Layouts etc.)

 

  • Well versed with relevant codes and standards used in the drafting work carried out.

 

  • Applies advanced techniques to complex designs and assignments using industry standards and codes.

 

  • Ensure that design services provided comply with company standards and processes in line with appropriate specifications.

 

  • Applies sound engineering knowledge, design logic and judgement to create innovative solutions to design problems.

 

  • Proficient with the latest developments in CAD tools and applications.

 

  • Operate within standardized engineering policies, processes, and systems.

 

  • Interface with project discipline leads to ensure CAD deliverable schedule is being met and budget is on track.

 

  • Communicate and collaborate with design and project teams to ensure knowledge sharing, best practice, and competence.

 

  • Comply with all quality system requirements regarding production, registering, revision and filing of drawings and sketches.

 

  • Guides, trains, and develops more junior personnel

 

  • Actively participate in relevant training and development to pursue continuing professional development.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

 

Essential Experience, Skills and Knowledge:

  • Professional qualifications - Formal academic and/or engineering discipline qualifications up to degree level or equivalent.
  • Relevant previous design and drafting experience (10+years required) in producing layouts, installation, transportation, and fabrication within the Marine and/or Oil and Gas industry, including work at Senior level.
  • Ability to assign, oversee, check, and approve the work of a team on a project or in the department.
  • Ability to prioritize own workload and manage time accordingly to meet time/budget constraints.
  • Sound communication skills, oral, written, and electronic.
  • Produces work of presentable quality.
  • Well versed in industry codes, standards, and design guidelines.
  • Sound knowledge in AutoCAD and Inventor.
  • Knowledge of Vault and Civil3D a bonus.
