Role Overview:

Subsea 7 has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Pipeline Engineer within the Central Engineering Team based in Houston, TX, USA.

The Principal/Lead Pipeline Engineer will be responsible to conduct detailed design and analysis of rigid pipeline systems and for managing a team of more junior engineers to ensure pipeline project design scopes are delivered on time, on budget and in compliance with codes and Client specifications. Provide technical guidance to designers and less experienced engineers. Ability to interface with all other disciplines effectively. This engineer will report to the Rigid Pipeline Discipline Manager and will be assigned to projects when required.

All personnel are expected to contribute to creating a positive HSEQ culture within Subsea 7 and ensure familiarity with and adherence to local HSEQ codes and practices.

Specific Key Responsibilities & Activities:

  • Provide specialist skills, integrity and knowledge in key areas of subsea pipeline engineering, including design codes, legislative requirements and current good engineering practice
  • Undertake responsibility for production of deliverables, which may include engineering support to the drafting office, design calculations, procedures, analyses, progress reports, bid evaluations, study reports and various third-party submissions
  • Undertake responsibility for delivery of full pipeline design scopes on projects though management of junior engineers with minimal supervision
  • Provide pipeline analysis support for projects
  • Provide technical guidance to designers and less experienced engineers from different areas (multidisciplinary team).
  • Provide detailed design and analysis of rigid pipeline systems in accordance with acknowledged industry codes, standards and design guides, client specifications and scopes of work
  • Provide mechanical line sizing, integrity calculations, thermo-mechanical analysis for offshore pipelines utilizing in-house design tools and Abaqus software
  • Candidate should be able to manage and perform detailed pipeline engineering activities including:
    • Wall thickness selection (API 1111, ASME B31.4, B31.8 and DNV-ST-F101)
    • On-bottom stability analysis (AGA Level 2 and 3 software and DNV RP F109)
    • Allowable free-span analysis (DNV FATFREE)
    • High cycle fatigue analysis using analytical tools and Abaqus software
    • Thermal expansion analysis using analytical tools and Abaqus software
    • Bottom roughness analysis using Abaqus software
    • Thermo-mechanical design (low cycle fatigue analysis, lateral buckling and walking analysis using Abaqus software)
    • Rigid spool and jumper design using Abaqus software
    • Pipeline route selection / optimization
    • Pipeline crossing design using Abaqus software
    • Installation analysis using Orcaflex software is a plus
    • Structural analysis using Ansys software is a plus
    • Cathodic protection design (DNV RP F103 and ISO 15589-2) is a plus
  • Production and checking of design documentation including feasibility reports, detailed design reports, equipment specifications etc
  • Provide support for preliminary pipeline routing assessments considering all interfaces, functional requirements, manmade and geo hazards using results from geotechnical and geophysical (G&G) survey
  • Coordinate pipeline engineering support to the execution of multidiscipline projects in line with defined budget and schedule
  • Liaise with associated subsea related disciplines and understand the interfaces within a project
  • Provide pipeline engineering assistance during occasional periods of offshore or site working
  • Provide pipeline engineering support to Business Acquisition and FEED study execution
  • Supervise Pipeline Engineers and support in Quality Assurance/Quality Control of FEED and detailed design deliverables
  • Train / mentor junior and graduate engineers
  • Actively participate in relevant training to pursue continuing professional development

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide input to project cost and schedule estimating
  • Assist with the development of the project specifications and purchase requisitions, as well providing support to bidding and subcontractor selection processes
  • Assist with development of pre-commissioning and commissioning procedures and activities including, testing, flooding, pigging, gauging, assessing and mitigating risks, coordinating with other facility disciplines and implementing process safety in work execution
  • Participate in Project reviews, HAZID and HAZOP
  • Fully understand Client HSE expectations, HSE policy, procedures, applicable local regulations
  • Promote zero accident, zero incident culture through inherently safe design meeting all regulatory requirements, client specifications and applicable industry codes and standards

Authority / Dimensions:

  • Operate within the Code of Conduct
  • Operate according to Subsea 7’s Management Principles
  • Support standards and procedures for the Central Engineering Function

Personal Qualifications / Experience:

Essential Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in Ocean, Subsea, Mechanical or Civil Engineering
  • Master’s degree in Subsea Engineering is preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in offshore pipeline design
  • Advanced knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using Abaqus software
  • Knowledge of structures design using Ansys software is a plus
  • Proficiency in specified design and analysis software is essential
  • Excellent knowledge of subsea pipeline engineering, including industry standard codes
  • Experience in delivering design per API 1111, DNVGL-ST-F101, ASME B31.4 and ASME B31.8 codes
  • Proven proficiency in handling front end engineering design and/or detailed engineering
  • Experience in overseeing or supporting pipeline design engineering and interfacing with installation engineers for shallow to ultra-deepwater pipeline projects. (particular focus on deepwater pipeline projects)
  • Experience in EPCI projects
  • Experience with sour service pipeline design
  • Able to work in and manage teams
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence to liaise with clients
  • Excellent report writing skills with the ability to self-check and produce accurate work
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work
  • Ability to communicate at all levels within the organization
  • A demonstrable commitment to HSE and Quality
  • Shall be self-motivated and have well developed interpersonal skills
  • A willingness to travel on short assignments overseas
  • Can work to deadlines set by management

Desirable Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Membership to a relevant Professional Body
  • Experience in design, installation and construction of offshore rigid pipelines
  • Familiarity with recognized industry engineering software
  • Use of Excel, AGA PRCI, Mathcad, DNV tools and Abaqus software
