What is the role?

Subsea7 have a great opportunity for a Structural Engineer to work within our Offshore Resources team on a full-time, permanent basis in our Westhill, Aberdeen office.  This role will be in our Fleet and Equipment group, which forms part of the wider Offshore Resources team. Offshore Resources is an internal service provider within Subsea7 ​​supporting all regions with the vessels, equipment and people required to deliver projects worldwide. We support the Subsea7 SURF and conventional fleet, currently 28 vessels, which includes dive, pipelay and heavy construction vessels. The Fleet and Equipment Function has full budget and technical responsibility for the day-to-day running of our fleet of owned and 3rd party vessels and includes fixed equipment onboard and the mobile equipment stored onshore for project use.

The Structural Engineer position is an excellent opportunity to join the Technical and Engineering team supporting an advanced, modern fleet of offshore construction vessels, spanning across many regions and sectors within the business.  You will be able to drive your own personal development and further your skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Supporting renewables and O&G project campaigns undertaken by the Subsea7 fleet
  • Development of your own and the team’s in-house structural engineering capability
  • Development of technical scopes for third parties and engagement with 3rd parties undertaking larger design projects
  • Design of vessel structural modifications and upgrades
  • Engagement with Vessel Superintendents, Crew and Classification Societies
  • Support if our sustainability and our energy transition goals

The candidates we are looking for should have demonstrable structural engineering experience related to ships and/or offshore platforms within the offshore or ship design and construction industries.  We are keen to hear from applicants not only with oil and gas backgrounds, but also from those with relevant ship or offshore platform design experience. This may have been gained through appropriate roles within a design office, consultancy, shipyard, classification society or marine warranty roles.

What will your responsibilities involve?

  • Provide specialist skills, integrity and knowledge in key areas of structural engineering, including design codes, legislative requirements and current good engineering practice
  • Undertake responsibility for production of deliverables, which may include preparation of design reports, engineering support to Drawing Office designers, design calculations, specifications, procedures, analyses, progress reports, bid evaluations, study reports and various third-party submissions
  • Provide in-place design, transportation and lifting analysis and sea fastening design using various software packages
  • Design and detailing in accordance with acknowledged industry codes, standards and design guidelines, client specifications and scopes of work
  • Production of specifications, data sheets and MTOs
  • Support package engineering and management on large structural material procurement packages
  • Undertake structural analysis utilising MathCAD, STAAD Pro, FS2000 and ANSYS or similar software
  • Coordinate structural engineering support to the execution of multi-discipline projects in line with defined budget and schedule.
  • Liaise with associated related disciplines and understand the interfaces within a project
  • Provide specialist structural engineering assistance during occasional periods of offshore or site working
  • Actively participate in relevant training to pursue continuing professional development

What are we looking for?

  • Educated to degree level in Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Naval Architecture, but experience may be considered
  • Engineering experience in the design of structures including within the Marine and/or Oil and Gas industry
  • Awareness of marine classification and local legislation
  • Identifies industry codes, standards and design guidelines
  • Ability to support package engineering and management
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, MathCAD, STAAD Pro / FS2000 / ANSYS or similar software.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards chartered status
