Title: Junior Legal Counsel

Subsea7 is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and bright Junior Legal Counsel to join our commercial legal team in our Sutton office. This role is ideal for a newly qualified or junior lawyer with an interest in the energy or construction sectors, who wishes to build their career in a dynamic and collaborative international legal team. You will join the Global Project Centre - East team providing legal support to a business unit which spans across Africa, the Mediterranean, Türkiye, Asia Pacific, Australia and the Middle East. The role offers the opportunity to work across a broad range of disciplines –commercial, corporate and compliance – and is a an opportunity to develop legal expertise in a fast paced business with structured support from senior lawyers to further your career development.
What will you be doing?
- Contracts: Assist in reviewing, negotiating and qualifying client contracts in accordance with company principles
- Risk management & stakeholder engagement: Work with senior legal counsel to identify and assess potential legal risks, and provide solutions to mitigate these. Provide clear and concise summaries of contractual risk to key stakeholders (both written and oral).
- Negotiations: Attend meetings with prospective clients and major suppliers to negotiate and finalise terms and conditions.
- Compliance Support: Assist with ensuring compliance with Subsea7’s Code of Conduct, internal procedures and applicable laws and regulations. Work with the legal and compliance team in developing training for internal functions and external stakeholders on compliance matters.
- Agreement Management: Review and negotiate a broad range of legal agreements including parent company guarantees, confidentiality agreements, leases, and subcontracts.
- Cross Functional Support: Provide general legal support to Subsea7 teams including supply chain, sales & marketing, finance, HR and local country management.
- Legal Research: Conduct research on relevant laws, regulations and case law to support business decisions. Provide updates to the business on new laws which may affect operations – including local content, fiscal or foreign exchange regulations. Consult with external counsel when required.
- Company Governance: Support the legal team in maintaining corporate governance records and documentation. Assist with the establishment or winding up of group entities.
- Dispute Resolution: Support the management of legal disputes with the relevant Legal Director and liaise with external counsel when required.
What experience would we like you to have?
- A qualified lawyer (ideally in the UK, but other jurisdictions may be acceptable). This role is ideal for newly qualified to two years PQE.
- Commercially focused with a sound legal knowledge of Contract Law and the ability to draft in a legal / contractual context.
- Strong attention to detail and first-rate analytical skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to build and maintain strong business relationships at all levels.
- Accustomed to report writing and presenting. Competent in the use of the MS Suite; Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.
Travel Requirements:
- Occasional travel (primarily Europe) may be required.
